West Kent Sunday Jnr Cup Final
1978-79
Extra-Time defeat for the Blue Anchor
Edenbridge ECHO 2-0 Blue Anchor
Blue Anchor’s bid for the West Kent Sunday League Jnr Cup was foiled at the Culverden Stadium, Tunbridge Wells when two extra-time goals enabled Edenbridge ECHO to win a hard-fought final.
But really Blue Anchor had only themselves to blame for the defeat. They dominated for long spells against a team they had already beaten twice this season but a mixture of bad finishing and wretched luck rendered them goaless.
Skipper Rob Webb headed a first-half “goal” only to have the effort disallowed and followed this by twice hitting the back of the net in the second-half only for the referee to rule no-goal on both occasions.
Then Mervyn Broad missed from the penalty spot and as the game went in to extra-time the younger Edenbridge side took control and a goal in each half enabled them to carry off the cup.
