Smiths Cup (Junior) R/U 1934-35

Albions (Borough Green) Winners over Platt 2-1 in Smiths Junior Cup Final

Albions leave it late
Albions  2    Platt  1

The Albions had rather a lucky win in the replay at St. John's and did not make sure of the trophy until the closing minutes of extra-time.

Platt did enough to win without extra-time but a sturdy defence, backed up by good goal-keeping by Toogood, kept the scores even.

A nicely placed free-kick enabled F.Higgins to head in early in the first-half, but Wilcox equalised for the Albion before half-time. Wilcox later got the winner as well.

Platt: L.Foster, G.Fuller, W.Higgins, G.Ladd, C.Bacon, C.Baldwin, W.Sears, F.Higgins, W.Webb, J.Leach, A.Howe.

Albions were therefore able to prevent Platt from completing the league and cup double, by taking the Smith's Charity (Junior) Cup at the second time of asking.

"Double Nap" In Record Final

Keen rivalry between these near neighbours made the final a record in one respect, nearly £12 being taken at the gate, and the sure markmanship of the teams made yet another, ten goals being shared.

The onlookers were well rewarded for their attendance, the game proving to be both interesting and exciting.

Platt soon took the lead through Webb, but within a minute Bowen gave Wilcox a nice pass and he netted to place the sides level again after three minutes play. Platt began to get the upper hand however, and before long had established a good lead. Leach scored twice, and later on Bacon headed in from a nice centre by Howe.

Just before half-time Mercer scrambled the ball in for the Albion.

The second-half favoured the Albions, and Wilcox scored twice to level the matters.

A combined forward movement saw Higgins give Platt the lead again, but in a desperate finish Capon equalised nearly on time.

Mr. F. Oliver, the donor of the cup, thanked the teams for their display.
